Baatara Gorge, and the three-bridge drop

Tannourine, Lebanon

You hear it before the path gives you anything to look at. That is true of most waterfalls, but at Baatara it is a specific kind of unfair, because the sound is coming from underneath you and there is nothing in front of you but a field.

Then the ground opens. Two hundred and fifty metres of limestone, three natural bridges stacked one under the other, and the snowmelt off Tannourine going straight down through all three of them into a cave nobody has finished mapping.

Go in spring or do not go

This is the part everyone leaves out of the photographs. Baatara only runs properly from about March to early June, when the snow is coming off the mountain. I went once in September, on the theory that a gorge that big must have something in it year round. It had a damp rock and a lot of my own disappointment, which I had driven two hours for.

The sinkhole is there all year. The waterfall is a season.

Late April is the sweet spot. The flow is heavy enough that the mist comes back up at you through the bridges, and the wildflowers on the approach have not been cooked off yet.

What it is actually like

There is a path down the side that gets you level with the middle bridge. It is not technical, but it is wet limestone the whole way and limestone that has had water on it for four thousand years has no interest in your shoes. I watched a man in loafers make a decision about his life on that path.

From the middle you can look up through the arch and watch the water come through the top bridge before it passes you. I stood there for a long time and did not take a single photograph that was any good, which I have made my peace with. Some things are shaped wrong for a rectangle.

Afterwards there is a place in Tannourine that will give you labneh, olives, and tea for less than the parking cost, and you should let them.

Getting there: about two hours from Beirut, the last twenty minutes on a road that is technically a road. Best: late April, mid-morning, before the tour vans. Bring: shoes with a grip, a jacket you do not mind soaking, sour Skittles.
